History: The Origin story

The School of Communications & Media Studies (SCMS) was conceived as a strategic response to a fast-changing media and communications ecosystem—one in which professionals are expected to think critically, communicate ethically, and lead with clarity across corporate, public, creative, and development sectors. Beyond being a training institution, SCMS was designed to serve as a bridge between academic rigor and industry relevance: a place where theory meets practice, and where knowledge is deliberately shaped into influence.

In 2023, the Learn to Live Business School UK (LLBSUK) took a decisive step toward expanding its educational footprint and strengthening professional capacity development in Africa—particularly in the communications and media space. As part of this vision, LLBSUK granted Dr. Sammy Ajufo a formal mandate to establish the School of Communications & Media Studies (SCMS) as an affiliate institution, with the responsibility of building a structured learning platform that reflects LLBSUK’s standards while speaking directly to the realities of the Nigerian and African communications environment.

Following the mandate, SCMS began the foundational work that would define its identity and credibility: designing programme structures, building governance frameworks, defining quality assurance processes, and setting up institutional policies that support academic integrity and professional discipline. In addition to establishing a school culture rooted in excellence, SCMS deliberately adopted a forward-facing posture—one that embraces innovation while reinforcing responsible communication practice. At its core, SCMS was built on a simple but demanding idea: communication is not only a skill—it is leadership. This belief shaped the school’s early programme thinking, its faculty selection approach, and its emphasis on applied learning. In its early stages, SCMS focused on developing training pathways that would serve both emerging and experienced professionals—people seeking to transition into communications, strengthen their credibility, or reposition for higher leadership responsibility.
